34-41 Shambles, York

Another view of the central part of Shambles. To the left, number 34 is a modern building probably built in the 1950s. The shop is York Glass Ltd which the company's ornamental glassware. It is also the source of the well known York Cats, which appear on buildings throughout the city centre. Number 35, 36 Shambles, with the three-storey whitewashed gable, incorporates a 15th century range in front of two-storey 14th range that had an open hall on the first floor. It now houses the Margaret Clitherow Memorial in honour of the Roman Catholic martyr who died in 1584 and who was canonised in 1970. 37 and 38 Shambles is a two storey timber framed structure of two ranges with symmetrical gables to the street. Built in the 15th century it was heavily rebuilt in c1950. It incorporates a passageway through to Shambles Market. Next door, number 39 appears to be a 19th century brick house but incorporates parts of a two-storey timber from as of the 15th century. Number 40 is a brick house of c1725. At the end of the row number 41 is three-storey timber framed building of the 15th century.
