7 Gower Street, Bloomsbury, London
7 Gower Street, formerly number 83, was the home of John Everett Millais and bears a plaque staying that "Here the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was formed in 1848". Pre-Raphaelite artists are among my favourite artists, I have studied them a great deal. The house is on the Bedford Estate which was laid out from 1780, the street being named in honour of Lady Gertrude Leveson-Gower, wife of the 4th Earl of Bedford who owned the estate. I know this part of London fairly well, having stayed in several hotels, for work and for leisure, and attended numerous meetings and conferences over the years. Not long after starting the sketch I was distracted by messages from a former colleague as we were trying to arrange a meeting. Then it started to spit with rain. I gave up, and went to the Tate Britain Gallery, returning in the afternoon to finish the drawing. A good job I made a mental note of where I was leaning to draw, the railings of part of Birkbeck College, University College London.
