A trip back in time to the Vikings 8: The longhouse

This is the largest building to be reconstructed in the Viking village. The museum call it the longhouse and have equipped it as the house of the village leaders. With a line of posts rising from the floor to the ridge of the roof, and several other posts similar to arcade posts in aisled building, it is based on numerous excavated buildings of the Viking and earlier periods. On the school trip my job was to ensure the children kept away from the fire on the open hearth. I sketched the view from beside the fire, including the quern stone that the children had a go at turning, by the post, and the loft in the corner. It wasn't long before I had to stop drawing and move to the quern stone.
