I took one of my old, broken hard drives and opened it to photograph. Opening a broken computer hard drive is not as easy as you would think.

After opening the hard drive I placed the hard drive under a softbox in order to make the reflection clean. It is very important to make sure none of the photography equipment is in the reflection of the very reflective disc. I added a shoot through umbrella to the left and a reflector to the right to get a nice reflection of the magnetic read/write head, on the disc.

I used a small aperture to get most of the hard drive in focus. I set my focus on the magnetic head to get that part of the hard drive sharp.

In Adobe Camera Raw I increased the shadows and decreased the highlights to get an almost HDR effect. This enhanced the reflections.

This photo was taken in February 2014 with a Canon 5D MkIII and TAMRON SP 90mm F/2.8 Di VC USD Macro lens.

Camera Settings: f/16.0, 1/160 seconds and ISO 200
