Sparring Spotted Sandpipers
These two Spotted Sandpipers, at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, Irvine (Orange County, CA), were engaging in some kind of odd stand-off, where they'd approach each other, then raise up high (as shown in photo), and then hold that posture for 5 or 10 seconds, and then drop back to their normal posture, go about foraging for a while, then approach each other and do the aggressive type posturing all over again. Watch them perform this at least four times in the few minutes that I watched them. No one seemed to be winners or losers in this interesting little interaction. 27 August, 2017.
