Bob Brode
Painter and painting
Preferrably view On Black
He just finished this commissioned copy of a painting by Edward Volkert . (An early 20th C. American impressionist -- "America's cattle painter" [sic]; bad picture of original here.) The commissioner's family formerly owned the original.
I was gratified that the light on the painting came out OK, as I had previously tried to get it by itself under similar lighting conditions (I thought) and couldn't completely avoid reflections. (Thick oil paint like this is problematic I think, because of the three-dimensionality.) I had better luck that time outdoors using not-so-open shade.
Strobist: White umbrella at head height, aimed to right of subject (1/2 power), white shoot-through umbrella at painting height, aimed at left edge of painting (1/32 power), both just out of frame. Olde Nikon speedlights triggered by ebay remote/built-in optical. No ambient.
