Life on the Edge
This image shows the remaining cottages at Birling Gap in East Sussex which are perched perilously close to the cliff edge. The chalk cliffs are being continually eroded through wave action at their base and water penetration and subsequent freezing from above.
The last major collapse was in 2014 where they lost the equivalent of 7 years worth of ‘normal’ cliff erosion in just a matter of weeks. A decade or so before, the property that used to be nearest the edge was lost to cliff erosion. This is a fact of life nowadays as water levels rise and the cost of protecting shorelines becomes prohibitive or impractical.
