ALAN PRICE - Jarrow Song

My name is Geordie McIntyre , an' the bairns don't even have a fire

so the wife says " Geordie, go to London town ! "

and if they don't give us half a chance , don't even give us a second glance

then Geordie , with my blessings , burn them down

Come on follow the Geordie boys , they'll fill your heart with joy

they're marching for their freedom now

come on follow the Jarrow lads, they'll make your heart feel glad

they're singing now , yes now is the hour

My name is little Billy White, and i know what's wrong and i know what's right

an' the wife says " Geordie , go to London town ! "

an' if they don't give us a couple of bob , won't even give you a decent job

then Geordie , with my blessings , burn them down

come on follow the Geordie boys , they'll fill your heart with joy

they're marching for their freedom now

come on follow the Jarrow lads , the joy'll make your heart feel glad

they're singing now , yes now is the hour .

The Jarrow Crusade was a march by two hundred men from the town of Jarrow to lobby Parliament in Westminster , a distance of some two hundred and eighty miles , which they covered in 22 stages . The marchers left Jarrow October 5th , 1936 and arrived at the Palace of Westminster on October 31st . Its purpose was to highlight the collapse of industry on Tyneside at the height of the Great Depression . In addition to the valiant efforts of the marchers , some ninety thousand people signed a petition , but although it generated enormous public support , the Jarrow Crusade had little effect on government policy.

Alan Price was born less than six years after the Jarrow Crusade , in Washington , County Durham about ten miles from Jarrow , and attended Jarrow Grammar School . He is a self-taught musician and was a founding member of the Tyneside group the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, which was later renamed The Animals . His organ-playing on songs by The Animals , such as "House of the Rising Sun" , "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" , and "Bring It On Home To Me" was a key element in the group's success . After leaving the Animals , Price went on to have success on his own with his band The Alan Price Set and later with Georgie Fame .
