Coming into Bloom

As it was another beautiful day here in Victoria today, my wife and I went out for several photo walks, enjoying the spring-like weather. During our first walk in the morning, I took this photo of some cherry blossoms coming into bloom on the side of the BC Parliament Buildings. Now, cherry blossoms are coming into bloom along many of the streets throughout the city.

By the way, if you are a Canon user and you use Photoshop or Lightroom, I recommend that you use Canon's Digital Photo Professional to convert your RAW files, save them as 16-bit TIFF files, and then open them for editing in ACR (using open as), as I have found that ACR does a horrible job of converting RAW files. I have always hated how ACR converted my files, as they never look identical to the images in my camera. Until now, I have never thought of using the RAW file converter that Canon provided with my camera, but tested it out with several photos today, and the difference is significant. In addition to poor colour rendition and darkening of images, I noticed that details are sometimes lost too - in a long-exposure shot that I took last night during twilight, in the ACR converted image several stars are lost; whereas, they remain clear in the DPP converted image; and, the colours and exposure are the same as in camera with DPP, but are off using ACR for the conversion.

It shouldn't be a surprise, however, as ACR takes a general approach to demosaicing images from the sensors of various camera makers; whereas, DPP is using the precise algorithms needed to convert Canon's files. That said, Photoshop or Lightroom are fantastic for the rest of my editing needs; and, I would not use DPP for editing ~ just for the conversion and to use the lens profile corrections.

I have replaced the following recent photos using DPP instead, and they resemble much more closely the original images as seen in camera:

Well, sorry for the long caption...I just thought some of you may be interested, as it may help you get the results you should be getting without too much work.
