Refreshment Time!
I have often seen swans drink rain water from open boats that have become stranded by the outgoing tide but never as many as this in one event. There are five more swans just outside the frame. It certainly wasn’t what you would call an orderly system – never more than 4 drinking at a time and as one finished another took their place. Any that pushed in were quickly seen off!
I sat on a rock for around 15 minutes watching this display on mud flats in Chichester Harbour in Hampshire. My perception of swans being graceful and majestic (which they are on water) was soon dispelled. Even with their large webbed feet they struggled to negotiate the mud!
