Halnaker Windmill

Located high on the South Downs near the City of Chichester, Halnaker Windmill dates from around 1740. There is evidence of a previous windmill on the same site as far back as 1540. It has recently undergone restoration by West Sussex County Council and although the final phase has yet to be completed, the sails are back on. Unfortunately, it has a temporary metal fence around it so I used the bushes to disguise this!

The top of Halnaker Hill is a Scheduled Ancient Monument as there is evidence of Neolithic Earthworks and a World War 2 radio direction finding structure. The windmill itself is a grade II listed building which gives it legal protection from alterations without the prior approval of the local authority.

It was a hot day when we visited with quite a walk from the main road and parking. The views from the top are amazing with the peace and quiet so noticeable. At a time when nature is in trouble, it was refreshing to see so many butterflies and the constant sound of birds singing all around!
