Crazy Kate's Cottage

This photograph, taken from the entrance to the Red Lion Hotel at Clovelly Harbour, shows Crazy Kate’s Cottage on the foreshore.

The cottage dates from the 16th century and named after Kate Lyall who lived there with her fisherman husband. The story is that she would watch him at work from the upstairs window but one day a storm blew up and sadly he was drowned before her eyes. Witnessing the scene drove her mad and one day in 1736 she put on her wedding dress and walked into the sea to join him in death.

A sad story!
