Reflections in the Moat *
This photograph was taken a few months ago during a visit to the Brockhampton Estate in Herefordshire. Luckily it was a calm day so the water in the moat provided the opportunity to capture some reflections.
The moated medieval hall was built in 1425 and the whole estate was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1946 by the then owner Colonel John Lutley.
The gatehouse was built from oak felled in 1542-43. It has been suggested that as this was more than a century after construction of the main house, the gatehouse was probably built for visual effect and as a display of wealth rather than for any defensive purposes.
