Hoewel er verschillende plekken in Berlijn zijn waar je nog stukken van de Berlijnse Muur kunt bezichtigen, is de Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer een van de plekken waar je het meest realistische beeld krijgt van hoe de Muur eruit heeft gezien. Aan de Bernauer Straße vind je een lang stuk Muur dat grotendeels in originele staat is gebleven. Vanaf een uitzichtspunt kijk je direct op de Todesstreifen en een wachttoren welke nog in tact is. In 1998 werd het monument door de Duitse staat geopend en is nu gratis en publiekelijk te bezichtigen. Jaarlijks komen er zo´n 300.000 bezoekers op dit monument af, een fractie in vergelijking met andere bezienswaardigheden in Berlijn.
While there are several places in Berlin where you can still see sections of the Berlin Wall, the Berlin Wall Memorial is one of the places where you get the most realistic impression of what the Wall once looked like. On Bernauer Straße, you'll find a long stretch of Wall that has largely remained in its original state. From a viewing platform, you have a direct view of the Death Strip and a watchtower that is still intact. The memorial was opened by the German state in 1998 and is now free and open to the public. Approximately 300,000 visitors visit this memorial annually, a fraction compared to other Berlin attractions.
