During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, after the river Maas had been dyked in and the Rotte dammed off, it grew into an urban settlement. The oldest document mentioning the town dates from 1293. In the mid sixteenth century Rotterdam entered a period of expansion and its population rose to 8000. Five new docks joined the medieval Oude Haven, beginning about 1600 with the Nieuwe Haven, followed by Haringvliet, Leuvehaven, Wijnhaven and Scheepmakershaven.
