Coppersmith barbet IMG_1437

Psilopogon haemacephalus (Sin: Megalaima haemacephala). Panna Tiger Reserve. Madhya Pradesh, India.

Also named Crimson-breasted barbet, it is found in India and Southeast Asia including the Phillipines. The name barbet refers to the bristles or barbs fringing its heavy bill. An omnivorous bird that chisel out a hole inside a tree to build their nest like a woodpecker. A strong beak is suitable for that. Their monotonous metallic call has been likened to a coppersmith striking metal with a hammer.

The Indian local names of this species are tuktukiya, Basanta and thathera. In Spanish it is referred as "Barbudo calderero"
