Jingyuen shows off the profile which would become the hallmark of Elswick's later second & third-class cruisers. The hull, with raised forecastle & poop, had pleasing lines and a certain poise which was accentuated by the shielded main gun positions. The low-slung secondary guns added an element of workmanlike solidity, while the slightly raked pole masts & funnel together with the light forward bridge gave an overall impression of grace. The result was two very handsome ships, even if somewhat stout by later Elswick standards at only 235 feet in length.
