Sanders 509 1030hrs Wells-next-the-Sea to Cromer 221021
On a very bright, sunny October morning, Sanders former Wilts & Dorset Wright bodied Volvo B7RLE type number 509 - HF54 HGX is captured on Warham Road in Binham as it operates the above diverted Coasthopper service CH1 journey. From here 509 will next head along Langham Road, but due to the acute turn a clockwise circuit of the village will be taken by way of Back Street, Field Dalling Road and Front Street. The same circumnavigation is also taken by buses heading in the opposite direction. Unfortunately my camera has not picked up the destination display on this occasion.
In the background we can see the ruins of the former Benedictine Binham Priory, which today is in the care of English Heritage. The building immediately to the right of 509 as we look - previously the nave of the once much larger Priory Church - is now the parish church, dedicated to St Mary and the Holy Cross.
Due to building renovation related works, the A149 currently has a width restriction at Stiffkey. As a result all Coasthopper service CH1 journeys are diverting in both directions over the Morston - Wells section by way of Langham, Binham and Warham. A minibus shuttle service is provided along the normal route via Stiffkey which connects with the main service vehicles at Morston, again in both directions. I understand that the diversion is expected to be in place until early December.
Operation of the combined Monday to Saturday summer 2021 service CH1/CH4 timetable, which ran from Saturday 29th May to Friday 1st October, required five buses. Four of them were provided by Holt depot with the above journey part of a North Walsham depot duty that worked three Cromer - Wells - Cromer round trips each day, plus positioning service CH2 journeys between North Walsham and Cromer. For the winter period three buses are required to cover the eight round trips per day on the Monday to Saturday service CH1 timetable and whilst the North Walsham duty of three round trips is unchanged, the Holt depot commitment reduces to two duties which between them cover five journeys each way.
