The departure of President Zuma from office was a result of many factors: evidence that, under his leadership, the ANC was heading towards defeat in the 2019 General Elections; pressure from financial markets played a role too, as did growing popular resentment of corruption. But his departure was also linked to a fierce battle to protect the Constitution and democracy, of which South Africans are justly proud. Central to this battle was the independent judiciary, civil society actors (most notably perhaps the Helen Suzman Foundation) and outstanding lawyers and judges. One of the most important law firms that acted in defence of the Constitution and democracy was the firm Webber-Wentzel, a firm with a long and noble history and reputation. Like many other major firms, it too has moved to Sandton. I took this detail picture of their impressive building on s shoot with Jan van Heerden.
