Bright Flower in the Jungle
Hibiscus
Princeville Botanical Garden
Kauai
Yellow Hibiscus is the national flower of Hawaii.
Hibiscus probably originated in India and was spread south into the islands of the South Pacific. Some varieties of the genus are also indigenous to other areas.
The plant falls into all three of Hawaii's plant categories: indigenous, "canoe plants" brought by the Polynesians for their medicinal value, and hybridized "plantation plants" brought by colonizers who migrated to Hawaii after Captain Cook "discovered" the Islands in 1778.
