St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Liverpool

Along with 3 other Greek Orthodox churches - in London, Manchester and Cardiff - the Liverpool building dates from the mid-19th century. It's a quality build, funded by the wealthy Greek shipping community of the day who ran a lucrative trade in transporting cotton. These days, it caters for the religious and social needs of about 300 Greek families spread around Liverpool, the Wirral and West Lancashire.

Inside, the building is spacious and airy. While agreeing with Joseph Sharples in his revised Pevsner that that the interior is rather spare compared to the elaborations of the exterior, it creates an effective backdrop for the many icons and fine carved furniture housed within it.
