Traditional Shops of Forfar - Frank's Fish and Chips

When I was a child, prominently on my mental map of Forfar were four fish and chip shops - a battery of them, as you might say, forming a rough quadrilateral. There was Oakleys in Watt Street, Davey Stark's off West High Street, Tony's on East High Street and Frank's in Castle Street. As far as quality went, you couldn't get a small fish-bone between them. Fish was a cheap as chips in the 1940s, and these shops were crowded after the factories came out, with queues for fish suppers, black and white puddings, and fritters. In a town of curmudgeonly shopkeepers, the chippers were child-friendly, none more so than Tony and Frank's. Maybe the fact that the owners were Italian made some difference.

Frank's is the only one of the old shops left, although others have replaced them. Frank Lorente set up business in Castle Street in 1936 before moving to these premises in Dundee Road in the 1950s. The shop is still run by the family and is as popular as ever. Not quite the bargain it was in the old days, the battered fish is still delicious.
