Lady with a Hundred Pockets
My cousin Eleanor gave me this to scan in. Apparently a common fancy dress in Forfar right into the 1950s was 'the lady with 100 pockets'.The girl in the outfit here is unknown.
I've been trying to find out something about the origins of the character. She seems to have emerged in the 1920s as a figure designed for fund raising. Each pocket was numbered and would contain a small 'gift'. A child (or adult) would choose a number and pay a standard charge to redeem the item from that pocket. I'm not clear as to whether the character was just dreamt up, or has links to a story, historical character or celebrity. Can you add anything?
