Forfar Family - the "Arbroath" Ramsays c. 1910

The photo was taken by D. Mitchell Laing in his studio in East High Street, Forfar. It shows Joe Ramsay Sr (far L) and his wife Jean (far R) before they moved from Forfar to set up a new Reed and Cam business in Arbroath. The business later became the responsibility of Joe Ramsay Jr, also in the photo. Most of Joe and Jean's 10 offspring (9 boys, one girl) emigrated to Canada in the Scottish diaspora of the 1910s and '20s. Three of the boys did not live see old age: James was drowned during WW1, Harry died in the flu epidemic of 1918, and Archie was killed on a building site in Canada. Jo Sr and Jean themselves died in Canada.

Along with Joe Sr and Jean are, Back Row, L to R:

Chic and Joe Jr (both continued to live in Arbroath, with Chic having a 'johnnie a'thing' shop on Sydney Street), Andrew, James

Middle and Front, L to R:

Alexander (Sandy), Harry, Ina, Archie, John (the traveller for Joe in the Reed and Cam business, who was guilty of sharp practice and sent to Canada as a result), Andrew.
