Liverpool - R. C. Pro-Cathedral of St Nicholas before Demolition 1973

Ongoing excavation of the Copperas Hill site for the new Post Office sorting depot. The church was sited immediately at the back of the Adelphi Hotel in Hawke Street At the time of the photo the Metropolitan Cathedral had been consecrated (1967) and the R.C. Pro-Cathedral of St Nicholas seen here had become the Chapel of Ease. Built in the Gothic style, St Nicholas was unusual for a catholic church in having galleries. It was to be demolished in 1973, so this photo probably dates from early in that year, or from the previous one.
