My Aunt Nan with Friends at Benholm House c 1927
Interesting bit of Forfar local hiistory here. My Aunt Nan (Hannah Macdonald) is pictured (back, L) at Benholm House, Glamis Road, at the time when it was owned and lived in by Laird, the jute manufacturer. To the right of Nan is the family cook, Bella, and in the front, Isa, the house maid with her friend, a Mrs. Bruce, who apparently emigrated. Both Bella and Isa predeceased Aunt Nan. As we know, Benholm House Residential Home became Nan's last port of call in this world. It's had several changes of use over the years. It was used for billeting troops during the war, then housed young female workers at Dons ("the Benholm lassies)", and foreign workers at Lockwood's canning factory in the late 1950s and '60s. Then it became a rather pleasant hotel, where my cousin, Julie Fearn, had her wedding reception. At the present time, it's still a nursing home.
I think the photo dates from the mid to late 1920s
