Great Charlotte Street

Sorry no date [pre-1933] from the City Engineer's archive at the LRO.

The Royal Court Theatre, [shown on the left.] was destroyed by a fire in 1933 during the opera and drama that Howard and Wyndhams Ltd were staging. The lower bottom left of the theatre is listed as a "Bank" on the 1908 OS map edition.

"The House of the Arrow" [based on a 1924 detective novel by British writer A.E.W. Mason ] is billing on the Royal Court poster [left hand side].

On the same side, beyond the theatre, is St John's Fish market with its grand entrance portal. On the right-hand side is John Foster Junior's St John's Market (Meat, Fruit, Vegetables).

Paving:- notice the flat sections of paving at pedestrian crossing points. This is to save people having to walk on the uneven cobble sets. The choice of cobbles enabled horse's hooves better contact on the road surface. They were generally laid left to right, with the long side of the cobble pointing towards the gutters.

The old Lewis's building can be seen in the distance, on Ranelagh Street.
