Machu Picchu

NCSCOS World History Objective 2.08 (Evaluate the achievements of the major civilizations of the Americas during the pre-Columbian epoch, including but not limited to the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas.)

These Inca ruins at Machu Picchu, Peru, are at 7,970 ft above sea level and date to around 1400 AD. I would have students use this and other images to create some kind of assessment project for our lessons on Pre-Columbian cultures; for example, a poster or a travel brochure. Along with this photo they would include a blurb describing the Inca culture and its accomplishments.
