KAJUKENBO: Warrior Spirit profiles the hearts and minds of two Seattle black-belt fighters. Kajukenbo is the evolved name of an early Hawaiian martial arts form dating from the late 1940s that combines several styles of fighting. "Kajukenbo" incorporates karate (ka), judo (ju), kenpo (ken), boxing (bo), and other martial arts; a mix intentionally designed to work on the diverse and rough streets of mid-century Hawaii. KAJUKENBO: Warrior Spirit (2:57) was filmed in Greater Seattle on May 10, 2014 as part of the Smithsonian Institute's "A Day in the Life of Asian Pacific America." Exterior location shots include the Bellevue Botanical Gardens, University District, and Woodland Park Zoo. The film features Professor Frank Mateo (8th degree black belt, Kajukenbo) and Sigung Wade Yamauchi (6th degree black belt, Kajukenbo) and was produced by Deni Luna, a freelance journalist and video producer.
