Abrasions to lumbar spine, bus crash, Albany to Hartford, Connecticut, September 1973
I remember someone saying that our skin (and maybe much else too) renews itself so rapidly that we're not who we were - we change constantly. But it struck me that scars don't just go away - though they fade and lighten - so in our skin there is a visible memory of past events and a kind of insistence on continuity. Hence this series - not rendered in the spirit of self-flattery.
