I hardly think the ponds were covered for every air raid, ..... rather, they covered the ponds and left them covered !
I just had to try this to see what it's like being a Canadian. As you can see, ... not terribly smiley. It must have been grim living in the woods with one water supply and a "Dunney". Remains of both can still be seen.
