When the cat's away ....

Things wot I made, .... Non scientific glass fun.

Made for the works Christmas drinkies (not the ball) at A. Gallenkamp Co. Ltd. Somewhere around 1974 :-)

All the Glass here is made from Borosilicate glass ... resistant to thermal shock like "Pyrex" oven-ware. (As opposed to the normal Soda glass)

It needs a great deal of heat to melt using a blowlamp burning a mixture of Gas, air and oxygen. not dissimilar to a large Welding flame.

Making the balls , 12 of them, caused sunburn and blistering on my face due to the reflected heat !

In 1976 I had my own department running up to five automatic glass processing machines (thats progress !) and during that hot summer, The temperature on a thermometer that I dangled on my chest read 135 C.

Wish we'd had a union back then !
