Prometheus, Chained to Mount Caucasus, has his Liver Devoured by an Eagle

1762

Marble

H. 1.14 m; W. 0.82 m; D. 0.48 m

The sculptor exhibited the plaster model of this work at the Salon of 1738. The bird is described as a vulture in the Academy's records and in the Salon catalogue, but is actually carved like an eagle. Adam followed the text by Greek poet Hesiod, in which an eagle sent by Jupiter pecks at Prometheus's liver to punish him for giving fire to mankind.
