Barred Owl -- Strix varia

In my yard. Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.

 

This is another shot from the morning I discovered one of the owls perched directly above me as I waited in a lawn chair for a pileated woodpecker nest exchange. The owl was so unconcerned about my presence that it alternately gawked around, slept and preened. Here it is shaking its feathers a bit after preening for a while.
