Bumblebee Mimic Robber Fly -- Laphria sp.

Robber fly with honeybee prey. In my yard, Marion County, Indiana.

 

I knew that bumblebee mimic robber flies existed but had never seen one that I could remember. I was pleased to see one with a honeybee in my backyard prairie/meadow. Had it not had this prey, I would not have realized that it was a robber fly instead of a bumblebee.
