"Coastal plain" pond

Tefft Savanna Nature Preserve at Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area. This property is in an area south of the Kankakee River in NW Indiana with extensive deposits of sand that had been deposited by post-glacier runoff and then sculpted by the wind into alternating areas of dunes, flats & depressions. Today, the drier areas have oak woodlands, oak savannas & prairie openings, and the wettest areas have seasonal and permanent ponds. The ponds have very strong botanical affinities to the coastal plain of the southeastern U.S. Most of the plants with such affinities are various grasses & sedges, but others belong to more attractive plant families, and include such Indiana rarities as Floating Bladderwort (Utricularia radiata) and Shore St. Johnswort (Hypericum adpressum).
