Union Pacific Steam Turbine 1

Photographer unknown

UP 1 was built by General Electric in December 1938. The 1 was one of two diesel outline steam turbines built that same month. The pair are shown here in April 1939 shortly after delivery to the UP. For the next two months, the pair would operate on various specials and test trains along with a handful of revenue runs. They were returned to GE in June 1939, having not been very successful. The pair tested on the NYC and in GE's shops in 1941 until UP decided they no longer wanted to be involved in their development. The pair were leased to the Great Northern in 1943 and scrapped later that same year.
