Swinging on the rope over the Pentecost River

Swinging on a rope out over a big river is one of those almost mythical chiidhood activities that seemed to happen only ever in storybooks or on TV. But when our camping crew arrived at El Questro in the East Kimbeley, there was a river, a tree... and a rope!

After a week on the road with an endurance mountain bike challenge, the pure joy of the rope over the river seemed too fantastical. Everyone clamoured to have a go.

The East Kimberley is land of such diverse condradictions. It appears dry and rugged, but beneath its craggy ranges and spinifix grasslands are vast repositories of water. The land is carved by ancient waterways and the fresh waterholes and rivers are life-giving oases. It bubbles up out of the ground and it floods and then recedes, recreating the land again every year anew.

The big wet this year made the swing even more thrilling as the water was deep and dark and flowing fast. Crocs? Maybe a freshie or two, but they're mostly harmless.
