Mount Washinton Cog Railway
This was the first mountain climbing cog railway anywhere in the world. It was built in 1869 and continues to delight passengers as it climbs 6288 feet to the summit.
There are two members of staff on each train, the engine driver and a brakeman who travels in the carriage. It is interesting to note that the engine is not joined to the carriage at all. The reason is that if the engine starts to descend uncontrollably, the brakeman would be able to stop the carriage, but not the weight of the carriage and engine combined.
