Day 41/365 2/10/2011

I have recently discovered that Cattail plant is absolutely amazing!

So when I was out walking my dog by the river today and saw some Cattail I decided that this would have to be my food photo for today!

“Why is cattail so amazing?” you ask, “and what does it have to do with food?”

Well, believe it or not every part of a cattail plant is edible. Cattail provides up to 8 different food products at different times of the year. Apparently some parts are quite tasty like corn or squash. This amazing plant grows in water all year long and can be found throughout North America and most of the World. Not only is Cattail edible it is also a medicinal plant (antiseptic, pain reliever, and anti-inflammatory) and all of the other functional uses this plant can offer are endless.

So if you ever find yourself lost or stranded go find yourself a Cattail crop and then you can make a shelter with a thatch roof, weave yourself a bed, chairs, floor mat, table mat, baskets and bowls all from cattail leaves. Use seed fluff for fire starter tinder, or make a down-like pillow and blanket set for warmth and comfort. Use the stalks to make fishing spears, arrows, utensils, and fire torches. Then of course eat a variety of food products the entire time.

All your basic needs water-shelter-food all met from a Cattail plant!

Amazing!
