Millions of Monterey Pines Hoping to Burn to Save the Species
The California coast is becoming a cemetery for the Monterey pine, its main tree species. The tree reproduces only when it burns, as fire releases the seeds from the cone. Due to enhanced fire-fighting efforts, fires are not going to happen. Controlled burning is as popular with the residents as Isis or Ebola, so no one in power will ever support it.
You can wait for Flickr to show the interactive virtual reality viewer (it can be slow, depending on your Internet speed) or click here for faster access to the viewer. If your browser does not enable WebGL, you can wait forever, so better click on that link! Clicking on the link also provides a better view, without nadir or zenith pinching. Convinced?
Bonus points to whoever finds my Giotto Rocket blower. I left it somewhere on the forest floor.
