Plastic bottles have been banned at the Sikh pilgrim site, the Golden Temple, in Amritsar, India - one of the founder members of the Green Pilgrimage Network launched in November 2011. Water stations, staffed by volunteers as part of the Sikh principle of service, have been set up to provide pilgrims with clean, fresh water.
The Green Pilgrimage Network is the world's first network of faith groups and pilgrim cities working together to make their sacred sites as environmentally sustainable as possible, and to encourage their pilgrims to 'tread lightly on the Earth'.
