Binders Cove Souterrain: Northern Ireland, May 2013

Technically these are the most difficult images I have ever taken. Major problem was squeezing my 230lb bulk into this underground passage! Then the only equipment I had was my pocket 'point & shoot', with no tripod. As I refuse to use flash the only recourse I had was to turn up the ISO, etc. I somehow managed to avoid too much hand-shake. The light bulbs which come on as you crawl along this underground passage were another problem. Although the results are not brilliant they do represent the first images I have ever seen from inside a souterrain (nothing by professionals with mountains of lighting equipment). The skill of these early builders in building this underground passage is amazing! Beyond words. You do get some impression from these images. My bulk filled the passage & left me no room to manouevre. I can only guess that these early architects/masons & users of these passages were much younger (after all, life expectancy was not as great & I am in my sixties!) & smaller than me (not as well fed!). Now I know why the Irish believe(d) in the 'little people'.
