Although the Alaska Railroad is like nothing I've ever seen, I don't think it will fill the void that MRL has left. If you could get a halfway respectable forecast, a rental car, and the willingness to put the miles on to find the blue stuff, it was as close to railfan perfection as you could find, even for latecomers like me who missed the 45 era.
