The mosaic on the east front of Mount Stuart was designed by the Russian artist V.M. Vasnetsov and its subject is the Madonna and Child. It was produced by the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg and although it was rare for this factory to produce pieces for external patrons, it is one of two pieces created for the 3rd Marquess of Bute.
