I like to think of myself as a people person. I love other people; I love being around them, watching them, interacting with them, and hanging out with them. I absolutely love people watching, so naturally, my favorite theme in photography is people and portraiture. Because I love this theme so much, this is what I chose to do my final project on.
The theme of my project is “You Are My Sunshine”, after the song my mom sang to me when I was little, and the song I sing to my niece before I put her down for her nap. To represent the theme, all the pictures I used on my final were pictures of people who are important to me, and people who have had an impact on my life. Some are friends, and others are family, but no matter what the relationship, they’re all people who “light up my life”.
My photos are all mounted on a sun that I made out of cardboard. The texture on the different rays show how everyone means something different to me, but when they’re all put together, they make something beautiful and unified. I really think I had a good idea for mounting my photos, because the giant sun and the color scheme really fit together with the project, and it brings the whole thing together. Although the ideas of sunshine and people aren’t usually the same, they really come together and prove that they go together in my project.
In the middle, I have a picture of my family. They’re the number one people in my life who make me happy, and make me radiate with joy. My family is truly my sunshine, because they make every day possible, and without them I’d be like a wilted plant; dead and boring. On the rays, there are pictures of different people who mean a lot to me. In the top center is a picture of my niece, Olivia. She has impacted my life and taught me a lot of lessons about patience, love, and kindness. She’s the best thing in my world and she’s taught me what it is to be truly happy. Moving clockwise around the sun, the next ray has a picture of me and my best friend, Lexi. She’s always been there for me, and she knows exactly how to make me laugh, even when I’m crying. She knows me inside and out, and she still loves me. I’ve never been so close to someone, and she means the world to me. Next is a picture of Ivana Tousley. She’s really on here because she made this semester (and this class) so much fun for me. We have become really close recently, sharing a lot of stories and even more laughs. She’s someone who has made my life better and I love seeing her smiling face every day in class. The middle bottom ray is a picture of me and my sister, Erin. She’s like my other half. Everyone says we look the same, but what bonds us more than looks is our personalities. Although we have disagreements, I don’t know what I’d do without her. She’s my best friend and sister, the best combination anyone could be blessed with. I trust her with my life, and I love her and the bond her and I share. Scooter and Sawyer are next. They’re two of my best guy friends, and I’d probably be lost without them. I’m comfortable around them, and I know I can be myself when I’m with them. They know how to have a good time without getting into too much trouble, and they’re always ready to find new, fun things to do. They make my life a little bit brighter every day, and I love them for that. Last but certainly not least is my other best friend, Jen. She’s always been there for me, through thick and thin. She’s one of those friends who believes that when the world walks out on me, it’s her job to walk in. No matter how much trouble I get into, or how many mistakes I make, she’s always there to give me a hug and tell me “it’s gonna be alright babe”. I don’t know what I’d do without her, she’s like family to me, and I love her forever for that. I couldn’t have asked for a better best friend.
I’m really pleased with my final project; it came out a lot better than I was expecting it to. I had high expectations, but it was looking like it wasn’t going to work out for a while. I am happy that it came out the way it did, because I think just looking at it, it’s pretty easy to understand the theme of the project. People may not know the story behind every picture, and they might now know all the people in those pictures, but what they do understand, is that they’re my sunshine and without them, I’d be lost in darkness.
