Acadia's Carriage Road

One exceptional feature of Acadia National Park is the carriage road system. This 45-mile system traverses many of the best landscape viewing areas in Acadia, and is considered to be the finest example of a crushed stone carriage roadway in America. It was conceived, planned and financed by the philantropically-minded John D. Rockefeller Jr., originally as a private roadway closed to automobiles, for private use. Over 60 years ago 11,000 acres, including the carriage roadway, was donated by Rockefeller and the Rockefeller family as part of current-day Acadia National Park.

This bridge is one of 16, each unique, constructed of locally-found material, and integrated into the natural landscape, according to Rockefeller's plan.
