Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) is another attractive native Michigan wildflower. Sometimes it's called Bee Balm, but Bee Balm is a separate species, Monarda didyma. Bee Balm's flower is almost identical physically, but is a gorgeous red color, whereas Bergamot is a soft lavender color as shown in the photo. Both are members of the mint family, and are very fragrant when crushed. Bergamot is used as a flavoring in Earl Grey tea.
