"Little Red"
The Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is Michigan's smallest tree squirrel. Although their range extends past Michigan's southern border, I don't recall ever seeing one in SE Michigan where I live. This one, and numerous of it's friends were seen in Northport Michigan at the Northport Lighthouse. They were very noisy and animated. Although they are tree squirrels, I observed at least 2 that went into ground burrows when disturbed. They are about 12 inches in total length (compared to about 20 inches for Fox Squirrels and Eastern Gray Squirrels that are common around my area.)
Captured in the late day sunlight.
