Garter Snake

A healthy example of the Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sertalis), about 25-30 inches in length, it slithered through the underbrush at Holland Ponds. Garter snakes can reach a length up to about 40 inches, and may bite if picked up but are not poisonous and the bite is usually minor. They hunt by scent for worms, slugs, small frogs and whatever else they can catch.
